Advanced Lipid Testing
The right cholesterol tests, and someone to act on them.
For adults who want to know their ApoB and Lp(a) and act on a high ApoB or LDL cholesterol (LDL-C): a licensed clinician orders ApoB, Lp(a), and a full lipid panel, you get blood drawn at a local lab, and your clinician reviews the results with you and treats ApoB and LDL to a target. Testing and treatment in one place.
Online, nationwide in the US. Protocols written by a board-certified preventive cardiologist.
Where people get stuck
People usually get stuck at one of two points: getting ApoB and Lp(a) on a lab order, or finding someone to act on a high ApoB or LDL.
Routine cholesterol panels often don't include ApoB or Lp(a), and many clinicians are still adopting them. Guidelines have moved, and the 2026 US cholesterol guideline now recommends measuring Lp(a) at least once in every adult and supports ApoB in several situations. Getting the tests on an order can still take some persistence.
Ordering your own labs online solves the testing part. When the results arrive with one flagged high, you still need someone to explain it and prescribe treatment. Advanced testing pays off when it leads to a decision.
What We Test
The markers that change treatment
At Preval, advanced lipid testing covers ApoB, Lp(a), and a full lipid panel, and adds other markers only when they would change your plan.
ApoB (apolipoprotein B)
A count of the particles that can lodge in artery walls and build plaque. Especially useful when LDL cholesterol can mislead, and the number we use to track whether treatment is working.
Learn moreLp(a) (lipoprotein little a)
An inherited risk factor that about 1 in 5 people carry. Usually measured once, because it stays fairly stable for life, and the 2026 US cholesterol guideline now recommends it for every adult.
Learn moreLipid panel
Total cholesterol, LDL cholesterol, HDL cholesterol, triglycerides, and non-HDL cholesterol. Most treatment targets still use these numbers.
Learn moreOther markers, when the protocol calls for them
Our protocols focus on the tests that change treatment decisions. Your clinician adds others only when your history makes them useful.

From lab order to a number you can act on
A one-minute sign-up, a video visit to confirm it's a fit, labs drawn locally (or results you already have), a plan with a target, and follow-up labs until you reach it.
Sign up in a minute
Tell us your state, name and email. When care opens in your state, a quick eligibility check comes before you pay. Preval is prescription lipid management only, and your clinician takes your health history at the visit.
A video visit, if it's a fit
A licensed clinician from our partner telehealth network meets with you by video, takes your history and checks that Preval is a good fit, following protocols written by a board-certified preventive cardiologist. If it isn't a fit, you get a full refund and advice on where to go instead.
Advanced lipid testing, ordered for you
Your clinician orders ApoB, Lp(a) and a full lipid panel, and you get your blood drawn at a local lab. Recent results from your own doctor, Function Health, Superpower or a direct-to-consumer lab can count instead.
Results turned into a plan
Your clinician reviews the results with you, sets a target based on your overall risk, and prescribes treatment if you need it. Options range from statins and ezetimibe to PCSK9 inhibitors.
Follow-up labs and dose adjustment
Repeat testing on a schedule that matches the medication, with dose or therapy changes based on your actual numbers, to reach your target and keep you there.
Ordering your own labs, or testing with treatment
Ordering your own labs gets you a number quickly, and plenty of people start there. Testing with Preval adds a licensed clinician who sets a target and prescribes treatment when the result calls for it.
Direct-to-consumer lab
- You choose and buy the tests online
- Blood drawn at a local lab
- Results sent to you
- Interpretation and treatment are up to you and another clinician
Preval Health
- A licensed clinician orders the tests that matter for you
- Blood drawn at a local lab, or we use results you already have
- Results reviewed with you and a target set
- Prescription and follow-up labs until you reach it
One simple way to pay
Preval runs as a cash practice. Care costs $99 a month, labs included, and treatment starts without an insurance wait.
Cash Pay
How cash pay works
Your clinician picks the medicine that fits your numbers and history on day one. Generics cost little at pharmacy cash prices, and PCSK9 inhibitors come through manufacturer cash programs.
Have Insurance?
Why we skip it
Skipping prior authorization and step therapy saves weeks. Your insurance still works for everything else, and people their insurer turned down are welcome here.
Common questions
How long do Lp(a) and ApoB results take?
Usually a few days after the blood draw, depending on the lab. Your clinician reviews the results with you and turns them into a plan.
Can I order my own blood test?
In most states, yes. Direct-to-consumer services such as Labcorp OnDemand and Quest Health let you buy tests like ApoB and Lp(a) online, and a clinician working with the service approves the order. Availability varies by state. These services deliver results. If a number comes back high, a clinician still has to treat it, and Preval covers that part.
Do I need a doctor's order for a blood test?
A licensed clinician has to authorize every lab order. With direct-to-consumer services, the company's affiliated clinician approves the order for you without a visit. With Preval, your own clinician orders the tests as part of your care and then acts on the results.
What does advanced lipid testing include at Preval?
Advanced lipid testing at Preval centers on ApoB, Lp(a), and a full lipid panel, with other markers added when the protocol calls for them. We focus on the tests with the strongest evidence for guiding treatment and skip markers that rarely change the plan.
Can I use lab results I already have?
Yes. Your clinician can work from recent results from your own doctor, Function Health, Superpower, Labcorp, or Quest rather than ordering a repeat draw, as long as they are recent enough to reflect where you are now.
Do I need to fast before my cholesterol labs?
Usually you can eat first. Meals barely change ApoB and Lp(a), and many lipid panels can be drawn without fasting. A fasting sample is sometimes needed, for example when triglycerides are high, so follow the instructions that come with your lab order.
Does insurance cover ApoB and Lp(a) testing?
Preval runs as a cash practice, so we don't bill insurance for labs. Your ApoB, Lp(a) and lipid panel come with your care, all within the $99 monthly membership. Outside Preval, coverage depends on your plan: some insurers now cover a one-time Lp(a) test for adults after the 2026 US cholesterol guideline, while ApoB coverage usually depends on the situation, such as people already on treatment.
Do you treat a high Lp(a)?
We measure it, and no medicine is approved to lower Lp(a) yet. A high Lp(a) adds to your risk, so your clinician uses it to decide how firmly to pursue your LDL and ApoB goals. Research on Lp(a)-lowering medicines is ongoing.
How often will my labs be repeated?
Lp(a) is usually measured once. ApoB and the lipid panel are rechecked after you start or change a medication, on a schedule that matches the medication, so your clinician can see whether you have reached your target, and adjust to reach it or keep you there.
